Action on Palestine needed NOW

Urgent action is needed to resolve the problems between the Israelis and Palestinians – this is the number priority for the world and its leaders, aside from sorting Iraq, Afghanistan, Sudan and other hotspots. The problems between the Israel and Palestine are fuelling a lot of the discontent amongst many Muslims, and this situation is used to justify much terrorist activity around the world. On Monday 13 Nov there was an interesting development announced, the formation of The Alliance of Civilisations as part of the United Nations; they published a report into the rising tensions across the world, which is covered here by the BBC: Call to bridge West-Muslim divide. Launching the report, Kofi Annan said: “We may wish to think of the Arab-Israeli conflict as just one regional conflict among many. But it is not…. As long as the Palestinians live under occupation, exposed to daily frustration and humiliation, and as long as Israelis are blown up in buses and in dances halls, so long will passions everywhere be inflamed.”

This is of course very true – the situation never seems to get better or approach a resolution, and much of the action in that area seem to amount to tit-for-tat, but actions by Israel are far deadlier and disproportionate compared to the actions of the Palestinians – this point also applies to Israel’s recent action in Lebanon which was completely unjustified and counter-productive. I’m not too hopeful about this new body of the UN and its report, but hopefully it can make a difference. To his credit, Tony Blair has always put the Arab-Israeli conflict at the top of his agenda, but sadly he & others have made very little progress in this area, not least because they have been pre-occupied with Iraq.
