Guantanamo prison is illegal and should be closed

January 11th 2007 saw the 5th anniversary of the opening of Guantanamo bay prison in Cuba. I cannot believe this prison was ever justified as part of America’s so-called ‘war on terror’ and even more amazed that it is still open and contains some 400 prisoners. Doesn’t the American administration get how wrong this place is? People are innocent until proven guilty; this principle must be upheld anywhere in the world and it should be followed rigidly, especially as part of a ‘war on terror’; afterall the Americans ‘war on terror’ is all about defeating “the enemies of freedom”….. but then the Americans detain people without trial, without the proper process of law, and in doubtful circumstances which could be considered as ‘torture’.

The Guantanamo prison should be closed simply because is holds people who have not been tried or convicted of any crimes. If the people in Guantanamo have any involvement in terrorism or have committed a crime, then put them on trial, otherwise they should be set free. Certainly, islamic extremists are a threat but again, anyone who engages in terrorists activities can be tried and convicted in the normal way, not held indefinitely in an illegal prison. Guantanamo should never have been opened… but now it should be closed – why hasn’t the UN or the international community been able to close it?
