Unbelievable scenes in Northern Ireland

The image of Ian Paisley and Martin McGuinness lauging and joking together is an amazing picture. It always seemed that the only real way forward for Northern Ireland, as an alternative to the armed conflict, was some kind of government in which the different factions shared power – many people in NI must be asking why did it take them so long? At last it’s happened and hopefully the different parties can get on and work together for the all the people of Northern Ireland.

What happened today in Northern Ireland shows what can be done in conflict situations – former sworn enemies can reconcile themselves to work together. In any conflict, the opposing sides end up having to work together, or at least accepting each others right to exist, however bloody the conflict has been. People who have actually been involved in murder and violence can decide to work peacefully with their former enemies. Somehow it seems natural, that after all the fighting and killing, peace and understanding have to prevail – it is natural for everyone to want this in time. It’s a shame that somehow we have to go through the conflict to get to the peace. Thank goodness the people in Northern Ireland seem to have chosen peace – it’s a good feeling.
