Extraordinary rendition of the law

Today the Council of Europe has confirmed the existence of CIA-run secret prisons in Europe and other parts of the world including Syria. The existence of secret flights to transport ‘terrorist suspects’ have also been confirmed in the report by Dick Marty. Mr Marty said “suspected terrorists” were also “kidnapped then tortured and detained illegally in rogue states like Syria, where there is no civilian law or law governing the rules of war”. He added that some detainees were held in secret for several years and subjected to “degrading treatment and so-called ‘enhanced interrogation techniques’ (essentially a euphemism for torture).” The whole sordid thing is reported here: CIA jails in Europe ‘confirmed’

A few years back the CIA denied this was happening, but now they no longer deny it but still regard this practise as legal and necessary – a spokesman for the CIA told the BBC that “the CIA’s counter-terror operations have been lawful, effective, closely reviewed, and of benefit to many people – including Europeans – by disrupting plots and saving lives”. This is totally unbelievable – that the CIA regard this behavior as lawful, necessary or even acceptable. To fight the so-called ‘war on terror’ we need to rigourously uphold international law – the whole point of the American’s ‘war on terror’ is to stop islamic jihadists who they say want to destroy our way of life and our freedoms, and yet we completely ignore international law and fundamental rights of these ‘suspects’. We must fight the jihadists fully within the law, this is the only way to win, if such ‘victory’ is possible. The practice of “extraordinary rendition” and Guantanimo Bay are illegal and should never have happened, or been allowed to happen – and to think many EU governments are implicated in these practices is shameful.
